Pine Island in the summer

May 28, 2014
FL Guide

Sometime between mid-March and Easter the "snowbirds" migrate back from whence they came. Snowbirds are typically retirees in Florida who wish to avoid the winter snow and cold of their home state. They begin arriving in November and stay until the weather up north improves generally in March and April.

Once our happy island returns to "normal" what do Pine Islanders do? One islander said, "Just walk into a restaurant and sit down." Another said, "It's so much easier to get my business done because the lines at the gas station, stores and banks disappear."

Pine Island offers a taste of "Old Florida." The island is surrounded by mangroves and aquatic preserves and we have an incredible diversity of outdoor wonders in our tropical paradise.

Many Islanders enjoy the activities of boating, fishing and kayaking once these facilities become more accessible. Plus its always a pleasure to be on the water once the Manatees return to the warm waters of Pine Island Sound is always a treat.

There are plenty of educational and entertainment venues at the Randell Research Center, Pine Islands Flatwoods Preserve, Charlotte Harbor Preserve State Park, and Calusa Ghost Tours.

And dining is so much easier as the lines at the island restaurants disappear. Locals can enjoy all of their favorite restaurants as well as two new restaurants: Saltwater Smokehouse and Flatheads.
