FL Guide

"Season" is here and in North Fort Myers that means a number of fun and interesting events are about to come around very soon. Some of Lee County's oldest and best events and attractions sit on the "opportunity side of the river."

The Shell Factory

Perhaps the most recognized place in the North Fort Myers area. Known for years as a great tourist attraction, it has in recent years become a family destination for year-round residents, as well.

Shell Factory

With a fun park, nature park, numerous shops, including the newly expanded Holiday House, arcade and other great attractions, the Shell Factory has become the favorite place to visit at a fraction of the cost of going to Disney World or Busch Gardens.

The Shell Factory is home to the annual Gumbofest in January, Goldenfest in February and the Taste of North Fort Myers in April. There are smaller events that seem to grow every year.

It is also home to the biggest classic car shows in the area every Monday, where more than 400 vehicles come during peak season. The show moved from Merchant Crossing last year and has been a game changer for them. The weekly Farmer's Market will also be moving there this winter.

The Shell Factory is located on the corner of Old and New 41

Lee Civic Center

There's usually something going on there every weekend. One can attend an RV show, crafts fair, gun show or the granddaddy of them all, the Lee County Fair toward the end of winter, a Southwest Florida tradition for more than 90 years, drawing more than 100,000 people annually.

The Buckler's Craft Fair and Land Auction are regular features at the civic center and return in November. The La Mesa RV show is coming in December, followed by one of the largest RV shows in the region in January. The fair this year is from Feb. 23 to March 5, 2017.

Lee Civic Center is located at 11831 Bayshore Road.

ECHO Farm

A farm dedicated to help feed people worldwide, is open for tours year-round and features plants and trees from all over the world. It's biggest annual event is the Global Food & Farm Festival, which is slated for March 18, 2017, but it also hosts workshops, conferences and other events.

ECHO is located at 17391 Durrance Road.

Lee County Posse Arena

The arena features jackpot barrel racing the first Friday of every month, clinics and even truck tug-o-wars, with one scheduled for Jan. 14, 2017.

Lee County Posse Arena is located at 17401 Palm Creek Drive.

Nalle Grade Park

This is where the Lee County Archers meet with their bows and arrows, with competitions the first and third Sundays of the month and open shooting on Thursday and a new indoor league on Tuesdays.

Nalle Grade Park is located on Nalle Grade Road.

North Fort Myers Recreation Center

Is where a lot of the action is. There isn't much you can't do at the center, from playing baseball and football and pickleball to making ceramics, learning karate and more.

It is part of the community park, the home of North Fort Myers Babe Ruth, 4-H, and the Red Knights Pop Warner football team. You can also bring the kids to the playground, play Frisbee golf and more.

It is also the home of the Lee County Shuffleboard Club, where the best shufflers come from all around to win top honors.

The SHARE Club, comprised of seniors 50 and over, has dozens of activities and events seniors can participate in all year. The center also plays host to meetings and important athletic events each year.

North Fort Myers also has one of the busiest community pools in Lee County at 5170 Orange Grove Boulevard, featuring exercise and free swim programs for people of all ages, as well as the library, across from the rec center. Enjoy it while you can. They're going to have a new one in 2019.

Among the other places to go

For those who love golf, there are plenty of courses to choose from. Del Tura features three nine-hole executive courses, while Heron's Glen and Magnolia Landing provide a par-72 18-hole course. Other executive courses include Six Lakes, Sabal Springs, Riverbend, Pine Lakes, Lake Fairways and El Rio.

With season coming quickly, you may want to call ahead to schedule a tee time. They're sure to go fast.

Down the road, at the old drive-in theatre, is the Wednesday flea market, where people come to find some good deals and sell some of their old junk, which could be someone else's treasure. You can bring the kids roller skating at The Palace, take them to the AMC Theatre at Merchant Crossing and more.
