Fort Myers-Lee County Garden Council to present floral design classes

A beginner's course in flower art is being presented by the Fort Myers-Lee County Garden Council and is open to the public. The three-session course will be offered on Mondays, Jan. 15, Jan. 29, and Feb. 5. The cost for the course is $75, which will be held at the Council headquarters, 2166 Virginia Avenue, Fort Myers, the home of the Berne Davis Botanical Garden. Parking is free; handicap parking is available.

Classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will consist of a demonstration in the morning and a workshop in the afternoon. Students will "learn by doing" and will be individually critiqued by the instructor. Students will be supplied with the basic materials needed with the exception of straight stems that could be used.

To register for the course, make checks payable to FMLCGC, Inc. and send to Terry Pinck, 706 Henry Avenue, Lehigh Acres, FL 33972. Classes will be limited to 30 students. Students should pack their own lunch.

The Berne Davis Botanical Garden is open for free tours Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each week. Parking and admission are free. The garden is the home of the Lorelei statue that was recently part of the old Fort Myers Library as well as the Mina Edison Botanical Library. Many of the displays in the garden have been provided through the talents and contributions of the 19 local garden clubs, nine plant societies, and other affiliates which comprise the Garden Council.

The Fort Myers-Lee County Garden Council was formed in 1957 and now comprises various clubs, societies, and affiliate members in the area. Membership provides an opportunity to learn about floral design, growing plants suitable for our locale, and conservation methods. The Council assists in educating and beautifying the community, and improving the environment. A speakers bureau provides speakers for meetings and events. The Council is a member of the National Garden Clubs, the Florida Federation of Garden Clubs, and American Public Gardens Association.
