Grab your sunscreen, slip on your flip flops, and set a course for Fort Myers Beach for National Seashell Day to help break a Guinness World Record. Break a Guinness World Record? Now really, how many times in your life have you been asked to do that? You and your fellow beach lovers will be vying to break the Guinness World Record title for the largest human image of a seashell.

The Lee County Visitor and Convention Bureau, in collaboration with LeeTran, the Outrigger Beach Resort, the Greater Fort Myers Beach Area Chamber of Commerce and the Lee County Geographic Information Systems invites the community to help break a Guinness World Record with more than 1,000 people on the beach to fill in the form of a seashell. A Guinness World Records' adjudicator will be on site to verify the attempt.

"Currently, this record is held by the Shell Oil Company," said Tamara Pigott, executive director of the Lee County Visitor & Convention Bureau. "It consisted of 855 participants and was achieved on Oct. 17, 2017. As the seashell capital of the world, the VCB believes this record should be held by the beaches of Fort Myers and Sanibel and the event committee is excited to work with the Lee County GIS as their technology will allow for the plotting of the shell formation in the early morning hours."

The record-breaking attempt is part of the celebration of National Seashell Day on June 21. Everyone will meet at the Outrigger Beach Resort at 6200 Estero Blvd. on Fort Myers Beach for a lot of fun from 6:30 to 11:30 a.m.

"The event is family-friendly and it is perfect as a group activity for youth groups and seniors alike," Pigott said. "We are prepared to welcome up to 1,500 participants. It is our goal to take the Guinness World Records title with more than 1,000 people on the beach to fill in the form of a seashell. We were inspired by the banded tulip, a shell native to our beaches and that is the one we are attempting to make."

What can you expect the day of the event ?

"When participants arrive at the Outrigger Beach Resort, they will first check in and each will be given their own T-shirt and hat to keep, as well as direction on where to find complimentary food and water," Pigott said. "Prior to the formation and official count, attendees can enjoy entertainment from our DJ, Sean Corey, and a musical performance by Bobby G. Fail Jr. with Conchalele, a voice from the bottom of the sea. Attendees are also encouraged to visit the tables of local vendors such as the Bailey Matthews National Shell Museum."

"My favorite part of planning the event is watching the community come together to achieve a common goal," Pigott said. "The VCB, LeeTran, Lee County GIS, the Outrigger Beach Resort and the Greater Fort Myers Beach Area Chamber of Commerce have put forth their best to make this event happen. Their dedication and cohesive teamwork is inspiring."

Pigot also sends out thanks to the sponsors: LeeTran, The Bagel Factory, Costco Wholesale, Lee County GIS, Greater Fort Myers Beach Area Chamber of Commerce, and The Outrigger Beach Resort (host property and partner).

"Fort Myers Beach is a great location because the beach is wide enough to execute the shell formation," Pigott said. "Fort Myers Beach also has an effective transportation system. We encourage everyone to use the two park and ride options through LeeTran."

So what are you waiting for? Imagine yourself making Fort Myers Beach history with your toes in the water and a day filled with fun.
