Pirate Pub Crawl Oct. 13

October 10, 2018
By MEGHAN McCOY ( , FL Guide

A Fort Myers Beach resident decided to throw a Pirate Pub Crawl this weekend after hearing that the annual Pirate Fest was cancelled. "I live on the beach. All my friends live on the beach. That was a great way for them (servers and bartenders) to make more money. Season kicked off with Pirate Fest out on the beach," Mike Yost said.

With the bartenders and servers suffering financially because of the red tide and algae blooms, he wanted to drum up some business for them.

Yost explained that they suffered through the summer even more with September being far worse than years before. Although workers save their earnings through the year and live off those savings in August and September, this year was more difficult.

"No festival means the same old thing at the beginning of October," Yost said, adding that the Pirate Pub Crawl is being held for servers to make some money and for everyone to have fun.

The Pirate Pub Crawl, which has no admission charge, will kick off with registration at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at 1666 I St., right next to Beach Bar and Hooters. Registration can also be done prior to the event at

The crawl will begin at 2 p.m.

Registration is being held for the crawlers wearing costumes. Crawlers will receive a number, which will be given to the servers and bartenders for voting purposes.

"I am going to give them a list of all the numbers. I want them to vote based on the costume," he said of why he is eliminating the individual's name. "They get one vote per bar. Each bar has one vote per pirate. The more bars you get to the more votes you will probably get."

There will be two costume contests during the Pirate Pub Crawl, one for the servers and bartenders and the other for the crawlers.

The servers and bartenders are asked to dress in their best pirate costume for the crawlers to vote on. Categories will include the most authentic pirate, scariest pirate, funniest pirate and sexiest pirate.

"I went around to businesses. We have cash donations. I know they need the cash right now, things are rough," Yost said. The winner for each category will receive a cash prize.

The pub crawlers are going to be judged by the employees at the bar and will receive some great prizes, ranging from a two-night stay at Lani Kai to T-shirts, donated by island businesses.

"I just went around and said this is what we are doing," Yost said, adding that the businesses said "We want to donate." "People just volunteered it and it's been great. A couple of business owners saw it online and the businesses said 'Come see me, I want to donate.'"

The winners of the crawler costume contests will be announced around sunset at Times Square, and the bartenders and servers costume contest winners will be announced around 10 p.m. after Double Standard is done playing music.

There are at least 20 businesses participating in the crawl. Yost said he has an ice cream shop on board that is making pirate flavored ice cream, so individuals can grab a scoop during the crawl to cool off.

Destinations include Beach Bar; Cabana's; Junkanoo; Hoosiers in Paradise; Goodz; Mr. Teguila; Lani Kai; Cottage; Mermaid; Salty Crab; Dog House; Sunset Grille; Pierside; Plaka; Pete's Time Out; Mangorita; La Ola; Tiki at Lighthouse; Matanza's; Nervous Nellies; Smokin' Oyster Brewery; House of Brewz and Yucatan.

"I encourage everyone to get a trolley pass for $2. You can get on the trolley and go to the next place," Yost said.

The Pirate Pub Crawl will also include a treasure hunt. Each participate will be given a treasure map, which has eight circles, two in each zone, west, north, south and east. At each bar the crawlers visit, they will receive a gold coin sticker when they purchase something from the destination.

"You turn in the map at the end of the night," Yost said, adding that there will be a random drawing at the end of the night for those who collected "Pieces of Eight" coins.

"To get your coin you can purchase anything. You can buy a bottle of water, a T-shirt, an appetizer. Any purchase will get you one of the gold coins," Yost said. "Tip your bartender and servers because that is what we are there for."

Both the maps and the votes for the costume contest have to be turned in by 6 p.m.

In addition to the contest and treasure hunt, select places will have such pirate games as rolling a dice to beat the bartender and a pirate hook ring toss.
