Truck tugs next at the posse arena

January 29, 2020

The Cracker Day Rodeo may be over for this year, but that's just the beginning of a very busy next few weeks at the Lee County Posse Arena.

This Saturday, the arena at 17401 Palm Creek Drive will be dug up to expose the concrete and allow for one of the more interesting events in town, the Truck Pulls, a virtual tug-of-war between trucks.

Keith Gogolin, owner of Florida Tugs, has been putting this event on for years at the arena and said it's about bragging rights, $3,000 in prize money and not much else.

"On a nice night it brings in people, but really it's just about having something to do to help the arena earn some revenue and keep kids off the street," Gogolin said. "It also helps when we turn the dirt and it doesn't get packed, which is better for the horses."

Ultimately, it's about keeping the arena open for the kids and helping the community. If a lot of people come, the arena makes out pretty well, Gogolin said.

The trucks, in two weight classes of 6,750 and 9,000 pounds, battle to tug the other truck to the end of the concrete in a best two-out-of-three battle.

It's not about two trucks burning rubber to see who's got the biggest engine. It's about finesse. It takes a very delicate touch. One tiny skid and you could be getting pulled backward and to defeat. Even the smallest truck can come out victorious.

Gogolin said it's also about simply having fun.

"We have people of all ages compete. It's a family event. They come out and have a good time and enjoy the evening," Gogolin said.

The event starts at 6:30 p.m. and costs $20 for adults, with kids 10 and under free.
